Autism Awareness by mdchan Autism Awareness by mdchan
Welp, I found out on the last day of March that the second day of April is Autism Awareness Day...

Sort of a funny thing to not know before hand since I have Asperger's (though, the DSM is combining it all into the category of "autism", so I've been just calling it "autism" lately).

But, there were folks talking about it in the community I'm part of, so I decided to do something for it.

The poem, I made myself. The characters in the picture are my best friends and I as furries. My furry character is the blue wolf in the middle (also the one on my DevID).
One of my friends wanted to be a bat-fox, so that's what the flying furry is. The others resemble their animals to the point of not needing an explanation (I hope).

Don't remember how long it took to do it all...a few hours, at least, for the drawing.
The poem didn't take long to come up with.

My nephew has severe autism. He's 11 and was diagnosed when he was 3. Communication is not his strong point. To convey his feelings, he mostly quotes movies and TV shows and such. But I imagine this is how he feels.

It makes me happy to hear that you think about how your nephew feels (and obviously try to understand him).

Yep. I didn't find out until 3 years ago, either. It's April 2nd in particular, but the entire month of April is pretty much looked at as Autism Awareness Month.

PS: Thankies for the watch! ^w^

Thank you!
I always like hearing from people that try to understand autistics; it restores my faith in humanity that some folks care enough to try and understand.

I think Asperger's and Autism are some of the most misunderstood things. Mental retardation sometimes accompanies autism, so a lot of people automatically assume that if someone's autistic, they're also retarded...I've never had anyone assume that (as I always have to explain what Asperger's IS), but I get from my dad all the time that I should be able to do all the things some other aspie can do (like hold onto a job for more than 3 months).

So, I can at least understand how annoying it is to have a family member make assumptions because they either don't have the facts or don't want to look at the facts.

I go back and forth between what I call it...technically, it's a form of autism (just high-functioning), and there was some talk a year or two back about the DSM just throwing it all under the label of "autism". Plus, some people seem to understand better if I just say "autism" (others, like my parents, get angry, so I often swap back and forth).

...dunno what ever happened to that DSM thing, come to think of it...

Thanks! That means a lot to me to hear! It goes both ways, too! I'm not very good at expressing my feelings at times (and running from some of my problems), but I have this habit of mediating and trying to help people with their own problems.

This is amazing. For a high-functioning autistic, the probably don't want to be cured. There are low-functioning autistics though, that really need something (not necessarily a cure) to help them.

Anyway, THIS!

This is so inspirational! I too know what it's like to be different I also have Asperger's. I know what wanted to be understood feels like as well. I've always been labeled as different, odd, childish and "slow." I was "diagnosed" at the age of nineteen but all my life I knew I was different from my peers. This piece really sums up everything I've ever said and thought about having Asperger's. I may be that girl who stares vacantly out the window on the train then freaks out if someone sits next to her and who cannot control what she says when she's angry. But I am a person too and I just want to be understood. Great work!

Thanks!

It's actually nice to meet another aspie that wasn't diagnosed until after school years. I was around that age, too, when I was diagnosed.

Looking at all the support for autism and autism-spectrum disorders these days, sometimes I think that, if I had been diagnosed sooner, I wouldn't have had such a hard time in school.

Plus, there was no help in transitioning into the adult world, and not much, period. Once you're grown up, it's like folks expect it to go away or something.
Things like staring vacantly (for me, I retreat into my imagination) and having a larger than normal personal bubbles don't just disappear.

It'd be nice if everyone could understand that. ^^
